Kastner Cup
Vintage Car Race

Background

National All-Triumph Race. The Kastner Cup is a respected annual vintage race for Triumph powered cars.  It has been run in conjunction with some of the largest vintage festivals across the county for more than 20 years. Mr. Johnston owns vintage race cars and competes on tracks across the county (see two black cars in main photo).

Race Chairman and Coordinator.  Skilled in program management and event planning, Mr. Johnston coordinated the Kastner Cup as Chairman in 2021 (Portland, OR), 2022 (Pittsburgh, PA) and 2024 (Sonoma, CA). The Kastner Cup is a four-day race weekend requiring activities to be coordinated each day for typically 75 to 150 drivers, crew and family. This includes causal evening socials, a banquet dinner, and awards ceremony.  This is done after his time on the racetrack each day.

Coordination Starts a Year in Advance. The difficult work of coordinating a race begins more than a year in advance. Tasks include:

  • Selection of the racetrack, date, and sanctioning body;
  • Preparation of marketing materials, such as the event poster;
  • Social media posts to attract vintage racing fans and car clubs;
  • Consolidation of race car preparation standards and racing procedures;
  • Recruitment of prospective competitors and event sponsors; and
  • Production of event merchandise, displays and banners.
